Stamp-1.The Universal Children's Day, celebrated on 14th November every year, is an occasion to renew out commitment to the cause of children and re-dedicate ourselves to fulfilling their basic needs and rights. The day also coincides with the birth day of India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, fondly called 'Chacha Nehru' by children. The Department of Posts brings out stamp on Childre's Day every year, which is designed by a child. this year's stamps are based on painting made by Master Keval Thakkar, a student of Amariyoti Saraswati Vidyalaya Kalvibid, Bhavnagar, Gujarat and Master Shivanna T Madvi, a student of Dada Vaidya High School, Curti, Ponda, Goa, Maharashtra who won the first prizes in the Group I and II respectively in the competition.

Stamp-2. Released on 14th November 2006, Children's Day. LALA DEEN DAYAL- The pioneer of photography in India, left a brilliant visual record of lifestyle, events and monuments of late nineteenth century, displaying in genuity and artistry, so that his photography were seen as expressions of the fine arts, competing with traditional paintings and even replacing many other forms of printing art. Lala Deen Dayal was born at Sardhana near Meerut in 1844. After studying at Thomson's Civil Engineering College at Roorkee, he became an estimator and draughtsman in the Department of Works in the Secretariat in Indore in 1866. Soon, he developed a keen interest in photography. He was encouraged by Sir Henry Daly, the Agent to the Governor General for Central India, who assigned him the task of photographing the royal visit of the Prince of Wales in 1875. Lala Deen Dayal had the opportunity to photograph the Viceroy, Lord Dufferin and Lady Dufferin, and he was appointed as a photographer fo His Excellency to the Viceroy. Soon he resigned from Government Service and became a full time photographer. In 1897, Lala Deen Dayal was granted the Royal Warrant appointing his Photographer to Her Imperial Majesty Queen Victoria. The true-to-life quality of Lala Deen Dayal's photographs provide a rare pictorial glimpse into a bygone era, the picturesque opulence, genteel grandeur and gracious charm of 19th century India, with whiskered nobility, hookah bearers, royal palaces, royal hunts and parades, elephant carriages: golden moment captured on silver plates for posterity. He expired in Bombay on 5th July 1905 at the age of 61. The Department of Posts is happy to issue a commemorative postage stamp on the legendary photographer Lala Deen Dayal.

HIMALAYAN LAKES- A set of 5 stamps @ Rs.5 each. The word 'Lake' conjures up a vision of blue, tranquil waters, boats with semi-recumbent revelers, and other paraphermalia of a tourist resort all set against a lush and beautiful backdrop. The lake eco systems are, however, of significance and under threat. On the one hand they are vulnerable to pollution, and on the other hand their vulnerability means that they can be excellent sensors of environment change. Known for their pristine beauty, the Himalayan Lakes of India, surrounded by towering snowcapped peaks, have inspired travelers, pilgrims, painters and adventure seekers. From Jammu & Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh, the Himalayan ranges are dotted with a galaxy of lakes of remarkable beauty. Most of these lakes are found at altitudes of less than 5000 meters and, interestingly, the size of the lakes diminish with altitude. The Department of Posts tried to capture the beauty and serenity of five Himalayan Lakes of India through this set of 5 stamps. 1. CHANDRATAL- in Lahaul and Spiti District of Himachal Pradesh that connects the areas of Spiti and Lahaul. Surrounded by snows and acres of scree, this deep blue lake has a circumference of 2.5 KM and is the source of river Chandra. 2.ROOP KUND lake is situated at a hieght of 5029 meters from sea level on the lap of the Trisul Masif.. This is called the 'Mystery lake' after human skeletons and remains of horses were found here. 3. TSANGU-in Bhutia language literally means "the source". This tranquil lake is located at an altitude of 12310 ft. on the Ganktok Nathula Highway. The lake is about 1 KM long, oval in shape, about 15 meteres deep and is considered sacred by the people. 4.SELA LAKE- which is also called Paradise Lake is situated on the way to Tawang, alongside the world's second highest motorable pass, ie.Sela pass(13,714 ft.approx.) in Arunachal Pradesh. The height of the lake is approximately 13500 ft. 5. TSOMORIRI LAKE- of 'Mountain Lake' is an enchanting expanse of water ringed by mountains, located about 240 KM fromLeh, in Rupshu Valley of Jammu & Kashmir. The lake is situated at an altitude of about 4267 meter from sea level, near a small village called Korzok. Shri.G.Varadaraj was a pioneer of education, business and industry as well as a Parliamentarian. Born to Shri.Ganga Naidu on 1st November 1936, at Coimbatore. Shri.G.Varadaraj proved an astute businessman while promoting industry, education, science, sports, culture and social welfare. He supported the growth and development of the PSG( Periaveedu Sama Naidu Govindaswamy Naidu) college of Arts and Science. the PSG industrial Institute, the PSG college of Technology and the PSG Medical College. As the Managing Trustee of the PSG Group of Institutions from 1978 to 1990, he founded the institute of Medical Science and Research in 1985. He was the founder of Rajshree Sugars and Chemicals Limited in 1987 in a most backward area of the Theni District of Tamilnadu which paved the way for the economic and social development of the area by providing employment opportunities to the local people. Shri.G.Varadaraj was a distinguished Parliamentarian. As a Mamber of the Rajya Sabha for six years from 1983, he served on several commitees. He passed away on 23rd October, 1990 bur his legacy lives on. The Department of Posts is pleased to to issue a commemorative postage stamp on Sri.G.Varadaraj.

Shri.Bishwanath roy, a veteran freedom fighter was born into a farming family at village Khukhundoo in Deoria District of Uttar Pradesh, on 10th December 1906. Son of Shri.Jagat Narain Rai, he got his early education at a village school and went on to do his matriculation from Gorakhpur. Thereafter he joined St andrew's College, Gorakhpur, where he came to be elected Secretary of 'The Hindu Chhatra Sabha' an association of students dedicated to the Swadeshi Movement. After graduation, he joined 'The Law College at Allahabad in July 1929. An ardent admirer of Mahatma Gandhi, Bishwanath Roy also came to be deeply influenced by the patriotism and nationalism preached by other stalwarts like Madan Mohan Malviya and Acharya Kriplani. He also came into contact with revolutionary leaders like Sachindra Nath Viswas, and was inspired to dedicate himself to the cause of freedom for his country by the sacrifices of revolutionaries like Ram Prasad Bismil.After independence also Bishwanath Roy continued to serve the nation, and worked tirelessly and selflessly for its reconstruction and development. Elected as a Member of Parliament to a record five terms from 1952 to 1977, he also served as Deputy Minister of Labour, Employment and Rehabilitation in the Central Government, apart from being associated with numerous public and Government bodies. Shri.Bishwanath Roy passed away on 27 the August 1984, at Benaras. The Department of Posts is happy to issue a commemorative postage stamp in honour of Shri.Bishwanath Roy.

The Madhya Pradesh Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Gwalior has served for the growth of the trade, Commerce and Industry not only for the State Government, the Chamber has taken the lead in bringing about far reaching change in terms of economical and industrial growth inits 100 years of existence. It was the then Ruler of the princely state of Gwalior, Maharaja Madhav Rao Scindia(First), who conceived the idea of setting up of such an organization that would provide a forum for the sharing of expertise and exchange of ideas between the business groups and the tools of governance. His idea crystallized during his visit to Europe, where he saw the functioning of such institutions. The earth sustains myriad forms of life, but not all forms have survived down the ages. Many animal species have become extinct, and many more are endangered. The greatest threat to animal today is posed by the rapid shrinking of physical habitat, largely due to the pressures of human population growth around the world: In bringing out a set of four commemorative stamps and maxim cards on endangered bird species, India Posts celebrates the unique beauty of each, while carrying forwards the message of conversation.

Stamp-1. MANIPUR BUSH-QUAIL, "PERDICULA MANIPURENSIS":- Inhabits stands of tall grassland and feeds in groups in the open, on grass, seeds, wild lenthils, and insects. Once endemic to the wet grasslands of north east India, there has been no confirmed sighting of the birds since 1935.

Stamp-2. LESSER FLORICAN,"SYPHEOTIDES INDICA " . A large bird of the bustard family and the only member of genus sypheotides. Inhabiting grasslands including standing fields of cotton and millets, the birds feed on grain, green shoots, seeds, and beetles.

Stamp-3. GREATER ADJUTANT STORK, "LEPTOPTILOS DUBIUS" :- A large wading bird of the stork family Ciconiidae, the bird is found in the tropical wetlands of north and north east of India. This is a huge bird, typically 145 to 150 cm tall with a 250 cm wingspan. The birds feed mainly on frogs, large insects, reptiles, lizards and fish.

Stamp-4. NILGIRI LAUGHINGTHRUSH. "GARRULAX CACHINNANS" :-Endemic to the Nilgri hills, this species feeds on insects and berries especially wild raspberry and hill guava. A noisy bird, its callis a spirited 'laughing', oft repeated. It breeds during February to July and makes a cup shaped nest pf grass, rootlets, moss etc. in a brush or a small tree.

Relations between India and Mongolia are characterized by strong civilizational bonds stretching back to three millennia. Over the centuries, literary and spiritual exchanges between the two countries have enriched our cultural ties. The 109 volume Kanjur and the 224 volume Tanjur at the State Public Library, Mongolia are a vivid testimony to our rich literary exchanges. Budhism remains a very strong link between the two nations. The them of this philatelic commemoration is the rich tradition of arts and crafts of the two countries. One of the stamps depicts an early 20th century bronze replica of the equestrian deity Rao Dev from Bastar, Madhya Pradesh. The extremely fine ornamentation of the bronze idol, cast in the lostwax technique and executed by a Ghadva metalsmith, is typical of the folk metal images from the Bastar region of India. Theother stamp depicts an ancient sculpture of a horse from Mongolia, an archaeological finding from the Bronze Age. The bronze cast statue was found in Murun city of Khuvsgul province of Mongolia. IndiaPost through this joint release of stamps celebrates the friendship and cooperation between the governments and the peoples of India and Mongolia.

AKKINENI LAKSHMI VARA PRASAD, popularly known as L.V.Prasad, strode the Indian cine world like a colossus, Actor, director, producer and script writer. L.V. Prasad was involved with various facets of film-making right from the days of the early talkies. Born into an affluent agricultural family in the village of Somavarappadu in Eluru taluk of Andhra Pradesh. He learnt the nuances and techniques of film-making from the eminent personalities like Prithraj Kapoor and Mehboob Khan. L.V Prasad also acted in the first Tamil talkie(Kalidas-1931) and the first Telugu talkie ( Bhaktha Prahlada)-1931). L.V.Prasad made great strides in the film industry and came to be acknowledged as a movie baron who propelled many actors to stardom. For his cinematic achievements he received numerous awards and honours, including the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, conferred on him in the year 1986 for his unique and outstanding achievements and services to the film industry. L.V.Prasad breathed his last on 22nd June 1994, but his legacy of his film lives on along with his gift of vision care for India's teeming poor. Ma.Po.Sivagnanam was a devout nationalist and freedom fighter, a great visionary, aTamil Scholar and prolific writer. Born to Shri.Ponnusamy Giramini and Smt.Sivagami on 26th June 1906 in Chennai, he had to discontinue his studies due to poverty, and work as a labourer. In 1927, he joined the Congress Party and actively participated in the movement against the Simon Commission. In 1930, when Mahatma Gandhi conducted the Dandi March, Ma.Po.Sivagnanam also took part in The Salt satyagraha at Chennai, under the leadership of Shri.T.Prakasam. He was imprisoned in 1940 for joining in the 'Individual Satyagraha' movement and again in 1942 for taking part in the Quit India Movement. In 1946, he founded The Tamil Arasu Kazhagam which participated in the movement for reorganization of the States on linguistic basis, and for formation of Tamilnadu State. He was elected as Alderman of the Corporation of Madras and continued for two terms upto 1952, and worked for the development of Madras. Ma.Po.Sivagnanam also made his mark as a writer, publisher, and editor. He has left more than 150 books in Tamil on various subjects, including "The Great Patriot V.O.Chidambaram Pillai", "The first Patriot Veerapandia Kattbomman", "Kamban Kavi Inbam", "Kallingathu Parani"' Bharathiyarin Padailay"' and "History of the Growth of Tamil during the Indian War of Independence", "Vallalar Kanda Orumaipaddu" bagged the Sahitya Academy Award in 1966 and several of his works were translated into English. Some have also come to be included as textbooks in schools and universities. He was conferred eith the title 'Silambu Chelvar' by the great Tamil Scholar Shri.Ra.Pi.Sethu Pillai, on behlaf of the Tamil writers Association in 1950 and was awarded "Padma Shri" in 1972 for his services to literature and education. Ma.Po.Sivgnanam breathed his last on 3rd October 1995 bur his legacy lives on by way of his contribution to the enrichment of Tamil language and literature. PANKAJ KUMAR MULLICK a gifted singer and composer was a pioneer in the field of film music, composing music and singing for over 100 films in Bengali and Hindi. Born in Kolkata on 10th May 1905, Pankaj Mullick's love for music was inpired by his father Sri.Manimohan Mullick. His career took off in the year 1927, when he got the opportunity of being a musician with All India Radio. He created the 'Mahisasura Mardini' programme, setting Sanskrit slokas to music, which is aired till today on All India Radio, every year on 'Mahalaya' morning, to usher in the Durga Puja and has become an integral part of the Bengali Puja culture. Immensely popular in his life-time, many of Pankaj Mullick's songs like "So Ja Rajkumar" and "Piya Milan Ko Jana" remain timeless in their appeal. He was the first person to popularize the songs of Rabindra Nath Tagore through films.As the Honorary Advisor tothe "Lok Ranjan Shakha" run by government of west Bengal, Pankaj Mullick also helped propagate social awareness amongst the masses through music and entertainment. He also authored four books on Indian music. Pankaj Mullick was awarded the 'Rashtrapati Puraskar' for composing the music for two films, 'Yatrik" and 'Raikamal'. He was awarded the 'Padmashree', in 1970 and the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 1972. He passed away in the year 1978, but his contributions to Indian popular music will remain unforgettable. The full-fledged High Court of Judiature for the Jammu & Kashmir State was established in the year 1928. Earlier, the Ruler of the State (Maharaja) was the the final authority in the administration of justice. In the year 1889, the British Government adked the tehn Ruler of the State, Maharaja Partap Singh to appoint a council. The judicial member of the Council exercised all the appellate powers, both on civil and criminal side. The State having two provinces- Jammu and Kashmir, had Chief Judges exercising judicial authority but they acted under the superintendence and control of the Law Member of the Council. Later the Council was abolished and a Minister designated as Judge of the High Court was appointed by the Ruler to decide judicial cases. In 1927 a new Constitution was adopted by the then Ruler of the State and in the place of Law Member, a Ministry in the Judicial Department was created. In 1954 vide Constitution Application Order of 1954, the jurisdiction of the Supereme Court was extended to the State of J&K. Under Art.32(2-A) of the Constitution of India, the State High Court was for the first time given power to issue writs for enforcement of the fundamental rights so far as they are applicable of the State of J&K. In 1957, by the Jammu and Kashmir Constitution Act, an independent judicial body with the High Court of Judicature at the top was created. Seeking to expand their sphere of influence and control in India, the British maintained an army that, right to 1857, was composed largely of Indians, or natives as they were called. Yet the British were strangely insensitive to the cultural and religious sensibilities of the Hindu and Muslim soldiers serving under them. This was evident as early as in 1806 when the British introduced a new dress code for its army. Many of the new dress regulations ran counter to the religious beliefs and customs of the Indian soldiers, yet the British sought to enforce these most stringently, riding roughshod over any resistance, and dealing out severe punishments to the protestors. On the morning of 10th July 1806, the Indian soldiers at Vellore rose in revolt against the British, killing some army officers and taking control of the arms and ammunition. They hoised the royal tiger flag of Tipu Sultan over Vellore Fort, pulling down the Union Jack of the British, and declared Tipu Sultan.s second son Fateh Hyder, as King.The spontaneous uprising of the Indian soldiers in Vellore Fort on 10th July 1806 was among the early manifestations of resistance to British Rule in India. Elizabeth.R.Voorhees College, Vellore is one of the oldest institutions of our nation, well known for its excellence in imparting education. It also has a rich tradition of moulding and shaping leaders of the nation. Many renowned persons have passed through its portals including the former President of India, Dr.S.Radhakrishnan. The origin of the institution can be traced back to 1895 when the old Arcot Academy at Ranipet and the Church of Scotland Mission High School were amalgamated and renamed the Arcot Mission High School, which was later upgraded to the status of an Intermediate College. In 1905, the foundation stone of the present College building was laid by Rev.H.N.Cobb. In the same year Ralph Voorhees, a friend of the College in the USA donated 25,000 dollars, which enabled the authorities to create infrastructure for the College. The name of this institution was then changed after the donor's wife, 'Elizabeth R.Voorhees'. The College believes in total personality development. Upto research level, it has more than 2000 students. A pioneer of higher education in one of the Tamilnadu's most socially and economically backward districts, it has played a unique and remarkable role in the upliftment of the underprivileged people of the region. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century modern education was yet to reach the women of India, especially the north India. In March 1904 Annie Besant, in a pamphlet entitled 'The Edication of indian Girls' inspired the Indraprastha Lodge of the the Theosophical Soceity of India to promote girls' education in tune with the Indian ethos and value systems. A small band of enlightened enthusiasts decided to establish a school in old Delhi, and on 21st May 1904, the first girls school in Delhi, the Insdraprastha Girl's School, came into existence with just seven students on its rolls. It was a defining and historic moment marking the beginning of a new era. Luminaries such as Rabindranath Tagore, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Motilal Nehru, Dr.Annie Besant, Sarojini Naidu, Tej Bahadur Sapru etc. visited this school and appreciated the pioneering work done in the field of women's education in India.Indraprastha School has played a remarkable role in pioneering the education of girls of all creed and religion. SRI PRATAP COLLEGE,SRINAGAR * is one of the most prestigious and oldest educational institutions of higher learning in the State of Jammu & Kashmir. The college came into being in 1905, when the famous Hindu High School, Srinagar was upgraded by the Central Hindu College Trust, Benaras(to which it was affiliated). It was largely due to the efforts of Dr.Anne Besant and Raja Daya Krishna Kaul, the Private Secretary of Maharaja Pratap Singh. The fisrt Principal, Mr.M.U.Moore, who was an Irish Scholar of repute, took the institution to new heights of excellence. In 1911 the college was taken over by the State Government and was renamed as Sri Pratap College after the name of the ruler of the state, Maharaja Pratap Singh. The college is now an exclusive Science College where Botany,Chemistry, Biochemistry, Zoology, Environment, Water Management, Physics, Mathematics, Information Technology, Geology and Geography are taught.
